Time Value of Money/Discounting Notes

Why then is it said that a discount must be taken off a current note?  The time value of money is what makes this business work and is the reason notes most often are sold at a discount.  Due to inflationary factors, a dollar today is worth more than a dollar next month, next year, in 10 years or in 30 years.  For example, payments to be received over time are not worth as much as cash today.  If a note investor is willing to give you cash today for promised future payments, the note buyer must discount the face value of these payments to account for the erosion of inflation.
